Pollan
Pollan
Mostly in the deeper and larger lakes in Dalsland. A smaller, salmon-like fish, sometimes mistaken for a kind of bleak. The pollan is only caught with nets. In the old days fishing with a seine was common during the autumn.

The pollan is rather numerous in the larger lakes during the spawning-time in October-November, and those who fish for household needs rarely need to put out more than a couple of nets to achieve an abundant catch.

The pollan is an appreciated foodfish, not unlike the Baltic herring on the East coast. Coated with egg and breadcrumbs, served with potatoes or mashed potatoes, it is a good example of Dalsland cooking.
